Canon R6V Video Setup Guide: Everything You Need to Know

The first time you open the Canon R6V menu, it can feel like the camera is asking you to make a hundred decisions before you have even recorded your first clip.

Which codec should you choose? What is the difference between 4K and 4K Fine? When should you use RAW? Why do certain frame rates disappear when you change the resolution? And what exactly happens when you switch the camera into S&F mode?

The good news is that you do not need to understand every menu item before you can start creating great-looking videos.

What you need is a solid starting point.

In this Canon R6V video setup guide, I’m going to walk you through the majority of the settings you need to understand for video. This is not meant to be an exhaustive explanation of every option inside the camera. Instead, it is the practical setup I would use to get the R6V ready for real filmmaking.

Grab your camera and follow along. By the end, you will understand how to configure your recording cards, codecs, resolutions, frame rates, audio, C-Log 2, exposure tools, autofocus, custom controls, stabilization, and slow and fast-motion recording.

Start by Putting the Canon R6V in Video Mode

Before opening the menu, make sure the camera is actually set up for video.

I begin by:

  1. Setting the video dial to Video

  2. Turning the mode dial to M for Manual

  3. Powering on the camera

Setting the camera to Manual gives me direct control over the settings that determine how my footage looks.

Once that is done, open the menu and begin in the yellow Wrench menu.

1. Choose How the Canon R6V Records to Its Cards

Go to:

Yellow Wrench Menu → Record Function + Card/Folder Selection

This is one of the first settings I address because your card-recording choice can change what the rest of the camera menu looks like.

The Canon R6V gives you several recording options.

My Preferred Setup: Main and Proxy

My personal favorite is Main and Proxy.

This gives me a full-resolution file on the CFexpress card and a smaller, lower-resolution proxy file on the SD card.

That is especially useful when I am recording RAW. RAW files can put a lot more strain on a computer during editing, while the proxy files are much easier to play back and edit.

I can begin cutting the project immediately with the proxies, then return to the full-resolution files when it is time to finish and color grade the video.

Even when I am not recording RAW, I like having the option to work with proxies. A smoother editing experience is almost always worth it to me.

For the rest of this guide, however, I’ll explain the menu as it appears while the camera is set to Standard recording.

2. Configure the Cooling Fan for the Shoot

Go to:

Yellow Wrench Menu → Page 5 → Cooling Fan Settings

The Canon R6V lets you decide both when the cooling fan operates and how quickly it spins.

You can set the fan to:

  • On

  • Off

  • Auto

When the fan is set to Auto, it only activates while the camera is recording.

You can also choose a fan rotation speed:

  • Stop

  • Low

  • Medium

  • High

The right setting depends on where and how you are filming.

For Hot Conditions or Demanding Recording Modes

When I am working in a hot environment or recording something demanding such as 4K 60p or higher, I would use:

Fan: On
Speed: Medium or High

This allows the camera to cool itself continuously instead of waiting until I begin recording.

For Controlled or Cold Environments

If I am indoors in a controlled room or filming somewhere cold, I can either turn the fan off or leave it on Auto.

In those conditions, I would use:

Fan: Auto or Off
Speed: Low or Medium

My general-purpose starting point is Auto at Medium because it works well for most situations.

The important thing is to treat the fan as a setting that changes with the shoot. A quiet indoor interview and an outdoor 4K 60p production do not necessarily need the same cooling configuration.

3. Decide How Aggressive You Want Power Saving to Be

Still inside the Wrench menu, open:

Power Saving

I personally disable:

  • Screen dimmer

  • Screen off

  • Auto power off

I do this because I do not want the screen dimming or turning off while I am working. When my camera is powered on, I am usually actively using it, so I prefer to control when the camera shuts down.

This is entirely a personal preference.

Leaving some power-saving features enabled may help conserve battery. For my workflow, avoiding an unexpected screen or camera shutdown is more important.

4. Select the Right Movie Recording Format

Now move to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 1 → Movie Record Format

The Canon R6V provides several recording formats, including:

  • RAW

  • HEVC S 4:2:2

  • HEVC S 4:2:0

  • XF-AVC S 4:2:2

  • XF-AVC S 4:2:0

For most users editing on a Mac, a higher-end computer, or a computer with dedicated media-processing chips, I think HEVC S is a strong choice.

It can give you very similar image quality to the AVC option while creating significantly smaller files.

For the best compressed-video quality, I would choose either:

  • HEVC S 4:2:2 10-bit

  • XF-AVC S 4:2:2 10-bit

I personally lean toward HEVC S because of the smaller file sizes.

When to Shoot RAW

RAW is available when you want to get the strongest image-quality performance from the camera.

The tradeoff is that RAW files are huge and require much more processing power during editing.

This is where the Main and Proxy card setup becomes especially helpful. You can record the RAW file to the CFexpress card while simultaneously creating a smaller proxy on the SD card.

That gives you the quality of RAW without forcing you to edit the full files throughout the entire project.

5. Understand Resolution, Frame Rate, and Compression

Next, open:

Movie Record Size

This menu is divided into three main choices:

  1. Resolution

  2. Capture frame rate

  3. Compression or recording format

When you are recording HEVC S, the compression option is limited to LGOP, so the first two choices are usually the most important.

What 4K Fine Means

The 4K Fine option is oversampled from the R6V’s 7K sensor.

Any resolution that does not include the word “Fine” is not oversampled in the same way.

The camera also includes options marked with a D. The D indicates a 17:9 aspect ratio, which is slightly wider than the standard 16:9 format.

For most of my work, I use:

4K Fine at 24 frames per second

That gives me a 16:9 image with the highest-resolution 4K result because the image is being oversampled from 7K.

Frame-Rate Limits in 4K Fine

While recording 4K Fine, the available frame rates are:

  • 24p

  • 30p

  • 60p

If you want to record 4K 120p, you need to change the resolution from 4K Fine to regular 4K.

If you want to record at 180 frames per second, you will need to use either:

  • 2K-D

  • Full HD

The available frame rates change according to the selected resolution, so always choose your resolution and frame rate together.

My General-Purpose Starting Point

For the majority of normal-speed filmmaking, my starting setup is:

I shoot in this configuration most of the time.

6. Enable Open Gate When You Need Reframing Flexibility

The Canon R6V also offers open-gate recording.

When you enable it, the available formats become more limited. You can record in:

  • HEVC S

  • RAW

The available recording resolution is also limited because the camera is capturing the full frame.

Your frame-rate options go from 24p to 30p, and you gain access to different compression choices:

  • LGOP

  • Intra-frame Light

  • Intra-frame Standard

  • High Intra-frame

The right compression choice depends on the bitrate and file structure you want.

I leave open gate disabled most of the time because I do not need it for every project. However, it becomes useful when I want more room to create different crops from the same recording.

Later in the menu, you can also enable aspect markers for horizontal and vertical delivery. That can help you compose an open-gate shot that will work in both 16:9 and 9:16.

7. Set the Audio to Its Highest-Quality Format

Move to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 2

First, make sure Sound Recording is enabled.

Then change the audio format to:

LPCM, 24-bit, 4-channel

This gives you the highest audio quality available from the camera.

Decide Whether You Need the Built-In Microphone

I personally turn off the internal microphone because I normally use an external audio source.

To do that, I:

  1. Set the recording mode to Manual

  2. Lower the recording level to zero

However, there is a valid reason to keep the built-in microphone active.

If you want a scratch track for reference or syncing, you can leave it on Auto and allow the camera to record its internal audio.

The right choice depends on whether you want the internal microphone as a backup or reference track.

8. Expand the Available ISO Range

Go to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 3 → ISO Speed Settings

I expand the available ISO range so the camera does not unnecessarily limit me.

When I am recording in a log profile, the camera may display an L next to ISO 100. That lets me know I am below the profile’s base ISO.

I still set the minimum available ISO to:

ISO 100

I also expand the maximum to:

H: ISO 102400

Am I likely to record at ISO 102400? Probably not.

I simply prefer having the full range available. If I ever need it, I do not want the camera preventing me from selecting it.

9. Enable 1/8-Stop Aperture Adjustments

While still on page three, find:

Video Av 1/8-Stop Increments

Set this to:

Enable

With an RF lens, this gives you much finer aperture control.

Instead of adjusting the aperture in traditional one-third-stop increments, you can change it in one-eighth-stop increments.

That can be particularly useful in video because the smaller steps allow you to make more subtle exposure adjustments.

10. Enable Canon Log 2

Go to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 4 → Color Mode

To enable Canon Log 2:

  1. Open Color Mode

  2. Select the Custom Picture option with the CP icon

  3. Press Info to customize it

  4. Open Select CP File

  5. Choose Canon Log 2

Canon Log 2 is the profile I use when I want to capture the most dynamic range from the R6V.

For this basic setup, I leave the additional Custom Picture settings at their defaults.

There is much more to understand about customizing, exposing, and color grading Canon Log 2, but simply selecting the correct CP file gets the profile enabled and ready to use.

11. Avoid Auto White Balance for Video

Go to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 5 → White Balance

The Canon R6V provides Auto White Balance, built-in presets, and four customizable Kelvin slots.

I do not recommend using Auto White Balance for normal video recording because the color can shift while you are filming. Those random changes can be very difficult to correct in post-production.

Instead, I use either a preset or a custom Kelvin value.

The camera gives you four customizable options labeled K1 through K4. You can hover over each one and use the top wheel to change its value.

Here is how I configure mine:

These are simply my starting points. You can customize the four presets around the environments where you film most often.

Enable Shockless White Balance

I also enable:

Shockless White Balance

If I change white-balance presets while recording, this prevents the image from suddenly jumping from one color temperature to another.

Instead, the camera gradually transitions to the new setting, creating a much more natural-looking change.

12. Customize Lens Aberration Correction

On the same menu page, open:

Lens Aberration Correction

These settings correct different optical characteristics of the attached lens.

Here is how I configure them:

Why I Disable Peripheral Illumination Correction

Peripheral illumination correction removes a vignette by brightening the corners of the image.

I personally like some natural vignette. Brightening the corners can also introduce a little additional noise, so I leave this correction disabled.

Why I Disable Focus Breathing Correction

Focus breathing correction can crop into the image, sometimes significantly depending on the lens.

I prefer avoiding that crop, so I leave the feature off.

I do appreciate the distortion, chromatic aberration, and diffraction corrections, so I leave those enabled.

13. Use Pre-Recording for Unpredictable Moments

The R6V includes a pre-recording feature.

This allows the camera to preserve several seconds of video from before you press the record button.

For example, when pre-recording is set to five seconds, pressing Record gives you the five seconds immediately before you pressed the button as well.

This can be useful for:

  • Events

  • Weddings

  • Wildlife

  • Other unpredictable moments

It gives you a little extra protection when the action begins before you have time to react.

The downside is increased battery drain. The camera must constantly maintain a three- or five-second recording buffer.

I normally leave pre-recording off, but I would enable it for a shoot where missing a spontaneous moment is a real concern.

14. Decide Whether You Want the Tally Lamp Visible

The tally lamp is the red light on the front of the camera that indicates when the R6V is recording.

I turn it off.

I do not personally need the visual reminder, and I often prefer that an interview subject does not have a bright red light reminding them that the camera is rolling.

That can help the recording environment feel a little less distracting.

If you are filming yourself and want an obvious confirmation that the camera is recording, leaving the tally lamp on may be useful.

15. Understand the Stabilization Options

The Canon R6V offers several stabilization features, but some of them introduce a crop.

Lens Stabilization

When the attached lens has its own stabilization switch, the main stabilization option in the camera menu may be unavailable. In that situation, you control lens stabilization using the switch on the lens itself.

Digital IS

Digital IS stabilizes footage by cropping into the image and making corrections electronically while you record.

With Digital IS set to On, the crop is relatively small.

With Digital IS set to Enhanced, the crop becomes much more noticeable.

I personally leave Digital IS off because I do not like the crop.

Subject Tracking Image Stabilization

Subject Tracking IS attempts to keep the detected subject in the same part of the frame while you move the camera.

That may be helpful for vloggers, but the amount of cropping can become significant depending on the movement.

I leave this setting off as well.

Video Auto Level

Video Auto Level uses the camera’s stabilization system to correct an image that is slightly unlevel.

When the required correction is greater than the physical stabilization system can handle, the camera applies a digital crop instead.

Because I prefer avoiding that digital crop, I leave Video Auto Level off.

These are all personal choices. The tools are available when you need them, but it is important to understand the framing tradeoff before enabling them.

16. Enable Magnification While Recording

Find:

Magnification Record Display

Set this to:

Enable

On some previous cameras, you could not magnify the image after recording had started.

The R6V allows you to do it as long as this setting is enabled.

While recording, you can press the magnifying-glass button to zoom into the preview and check focus. This does not interrupt or change the recording itself.

That is a very useful option when you need to confirm critical focus without stopping the take.

17. Turn On BT.709 View Assist for C-Log 2

Go to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 8 → HDR/C.Log View Assist

Set the LCD option to:

BT.709

Without View Assist, the rear LCD displays the flat Canon Log 2 image.

With BT.709 View Assist enabled, the camera shows a more natural-looking preview that is closer to the final converted image.

This viewing conversion is not baked into the recorded file.

When you import the footage into your editing software, you still have the original log recording available for color grading.

If you are using an external monitor, you can also enable View Assist for the HDMI output.

18. Choose the Exposure Tools You Trust

The R6V includes several ways to judge exposure.

False Color

False Color changes the image into different colors that represent specific brightness values.

This is my preferred exposure tool.

Zebras

Zebras place striped patterns over parts of the image that reach the brightness levels you have assigned.

Both tools are useful, but I like having False Color immediately available through a custom button.

Waveform

Go to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 9 → Shooting Info Display

Under brightness information, choose:

Wave Monitor

I prefer the waveform over the histogram for video exposure.

Then open the Waveform settings and change it from:

RGB → Line

After that, pressing the Info button cycles through the display options until the waveform appears on the screen.

My exposure workflow is built around these tools rather than trying to judge the image only by how bright the LCD appears.

19. Clean Up the Shooting Information Display

The Shooting Info Display menu lets you decide how much information appears over the image.

Grid Options

You can choose from:

  • 3×3

  • 6×4

  • Diagonal

Use whichever grid best supports the way you compose your shots.

Electronic Level

I set the electronic level to:

Small

The large option takes up too much of the display for my preference.

Recording Emphasis

Recording Emphasis places a red border around the LCD while the camera is recording.

I find the border distracting, so I turn it off.

You may prefer leaving it enabled when you want a very obvious recording indicator.

Aspect Markers

Aspect markers are particularly useful when recording open gate.

You can add guides for formats such as:

  • 16:9 horizontal

  • 9:16 vertical

That helps you compose a frame that can later be cropped for multiple platforms.

I leave the markers off unless I specifically need them.

20. Display Useful Lens Information

The R6V can display focus-distance and focal-length information from compatible lenses.

I set the focus-distance display to appear:

During manual focus only

I do not need it occupying space on the screen at all times.

I also set the measurement unit to:

Feet

Finally, I enable the focal-length display.

That is not particularly important when using a prime lens, but I find it useful with zoom lenses. It gives me a quick confirmation of the focal length currently selected.

21. Raise the Auto Power-Off Temperature

Go to:

Red Camera Menu → Page 10 → Auto Power-Off Temperature

Set it to:

High

The camera will warn you that the back of the body can become hot.

Setting the temperature threshold to High allows the R6V to continue operating longer before it decides to shut down because of heat.

I find this helpful when I am trying to get the most recording time from the camera, particularly in warmer conditions.

The fan settings and auto power-off temperature work together. The fan helps manage heat, while the higher threshold gives the camera more room before it shuts itself down.

22. Turn Off Low-Resolution Standby

On the same page, find:

Standby: Low Resolution

Set it to:

Off

When this feature is enabled, the quality of the rear LCD preview drops while the camera is not recording.

I find that change distracting, so I keep the screen at full resolution.

Turning the feature off may use more battery, but that is a tradeoff I am willing to make.

23. Configure the HDMI Display

The HDMI Display menu lets you choose where the camera image and menus appear.

You can display everything only on the external monitor, or you can keep the image visible on both the monitor and the camera’s LCD.

When using both displays, you can also decide whether playback and menu information appear on the LCD or over HDMI.

The right configuration depends on how you are monitoring the camera. I normally leave this at my existing setting unless a particular external-monitor setup requires me to change it.

24. Set Up Continuous Autofocus

Now move to the Autofocus menu.

The first setting I enable is:

Movie Servo AF

This gives you continuous autofocus during video recording.

Set Subject Detect AF to Detect Only

For Subject Detect AF, I choose:

Detect Only

When the camera detects a subject and that person later leaves the frame, Detect Only prevents the camera from immediately hunting for something else.

Instead of shifting focus to the background, it holds the last focus position.

I find that behavior more cinematic because the camera does not create an obvious focus search every time the subject briefly disappears.

Choose an Autofocus Area

I normally leave the AF area set to:

Whole Area

That allows the camera to detect subjects throughout the frame.

When you need more control, you can choose from the camera’s smaller areas and flexible zones.

25. Choose the Subject You Want the Camera to Detect

On the second autofocus page, open:

Subject to Detect

You can tell the R6V to look specifically for:

  • People

  • Animals

  • Other supported subjects

  • Auto

When I know what I am filming, I like choosing the correct subject type.

If I am recording people, I select People. If I am recording animals, I select Animals.

That said, Auto works well in most situations, so leaving it there is a reasonable starting point.

Eye Detection

I leave eye detection on:

Auto

This allows the camera to choose which eye to prioritize.

You can manually select the subject’s right or left eye. Just remember that the menu refers to the subject’s right and left, not the way those eyes appear from behind the camera.

26. Register a Person for Focus Priority

The R6V can register a specific person and prioritize that individual when they appear in the frame.

Imagine you are recording a wedding and want the camera to prioritize the bride.

You can:

  1. Enable registered-people priority

  2. Take a clear, front-facing photo of the bride

  3. Use good lighting for the reference photo

  4. Let the camera recognize and prioritize her during the event

That can be extremely helpful when several people are visible and one person is more important to the story.

I do not need it for most everyday shoots, but it is a useful option for events and similar productions.

27. Enable AF for Close-Up Demos When Reviewing Products

The R6V includes an autofocus setting designed for close-up demonstrations.

This is especially useful for YouTube product reviews.

With the setting enabled, you can hold an object in front of the camera and the autofocus will shift from your face to the product. When you lower the product, focus returns to you.

I leave it off unless I am specifically filming that type of demonstration.

For creators who regularly present products directly to the camera, it can make the process much easier.

28. Adjust Autofocus Speed for the Type of Motion

You can also customize how quickly the autofocus transitions.

My normal autofocus-speed range is around:

6 or 7

When I am recording slow motion, I may raise it to:

8, 9, or 10

The ideal speed depends on the movement you are filming and how quickly you want the camera to respond.

29. Configure Manual Focus Peaking

Go to the manual-focus peaking options.

I use:

Peaking level: High
Color: Red

Red is the easiest color for me to see in most situations.

Depending on your scene, yellow or blue may stand out more clearly, so choose the color that contrasts best with what you are filming.

The rear D-pad is normally assigned to focus peaking by default. That gives you a quick way to enable or disable it without opening the menu every time.

30. Customize the Buttons for Video

Move to:

Green Customize Controls Menu

The Canon R6V allows you to create separate button assignments for photography and video.

That means the same physical button can perform one action in photo mode and a different action in video mode.

I strongly recommend creating a hotkey for:

False Color

I assign False Color to button number three.

Inside the customization menu, its icon looks like three gradients with a small sun in the corner.

That assignment lets me turn False Color on and off immediately while I am filming.

You should continue customizing the other buttons around the features you use most. The goal is to keep important controls beneath your fingers instead of buried several pages deep inside the menu.

31. Assign Kelvin to the RF Lens Control Ring

Open:

Customize Dials and Control Rings

The R6V lets you customize:

  • The top wheel

  • The rear wheels

  • The RF lens control ring

I assign the RF lens control ring to:

Kelvin

This allows me to make quick white-balance adjustments directly from the lens instead of opening the White Balance menu.

That pairs especially well with my four custom Kelvin presets.

32. Enable Recording With Manual and Vintage Lenses

Go to:

Orange Camera Menu → Page 3 → Release Shutter Without Lens

Set it to:

Enable

Some manual-focus and vintage lenses do not contain electronic components that communicate with the camera.

Without this setting enabled, the R6V may think no lens is attached and prevent you from recording.

Enabling Release Shutter Without Lens lets you use those fully manual lenses normally.

33. Stop the Lens From Resetting Its Focus Position

On the same page, find:

Retract Lens on Power Off

Set it to:

Disable

When this option is enabled, turning off the camera may cause the lens to return to a default focus position.

Disabling it helps preserve the last focus position you were using.

This is a fairly niche setting, but it can be valuable when you have carefully set manual focus and do not want the camera changing it after a restart.

How to Use S&F Mode on the Canon R6V

The standard video mode covers most recording situations, but the R6V also includes a dedicated S&F, or Slow and Fast Motion, mode.

This is not something you see on every Canon mirrorless camera, and it gives you a direct way to create slow-motion and fast-motion footage in camera.

1. Switch the Camera Into S&F Mode

Use the top dial and select:

S&F

Then open the red Camera menu and change the shooting mode to:

S&F Manual

This gives you manual control over the recording settings while using Slow and Fast Motion mode.

2. Choose an S&F Recording Format

RAW is not available in S&F mode.

Your available formats are:

  • HEVC S

  • AVC S

I keep mine on:

HEVC S

3. Set the Playback and Capture Frame Rates

The Movie Record Size menu looks slightly different in S&F mode.

You select:

  1. Resolution

  2. Capture frame rate

  3. Playback frame rate

  4. Recording format

I usually set the playback frame rate to:

24 frames per second

I then change the capture frame rate depending on whether I want slow or fast motion.

Creating Slow Motion

When the capture frame rate is higher than the playback frame rate, the footage plays in slow motion.

For example:

Capture: 120 fps
Playback: 24 fps
Result: 5× slow motion

Creating Normal-Speed Motion

When the capture and playback rates are both 24 fps, the footage plays at normal speed.

Creating Fast Motion and Time-Lapse Effects

When the capture frame rate is lower than 24 fps but the footage plays back at 24 fps, the result is accelerated motion.

The lower the capture frame rate, the faster the final footage appears.

These lower frame rates effectively create time-lapse-style motion.

4. Remember That Resolution Changes the Available S&F Speeds

The available capture rates depend on the selected resolution.

In Full HD, the R6V gives you a range from:

1 fps to 180 fps

In 4K Fine, the available range is:

3 fps to 60 fps

The camera displays useful information at the top of the menu, including:

  • Whether the result is slow or fast motion

  • The final playback speed

  • Capture frame rate

  • Playback frame rate

  • Total recording time

  • Data rate

The S&F interface can look confusing at first, but the speed indicator in the upper-right corner makes the result much easier to understand.

I use that indicator to decide whether I am creating a dramatic slow-motion shot or a much faster time-lapse effect.

A Quick Pre-Shoot Checklist

Before I begin recording, I would quickly confirm the following:

  1. Choose the recording format. Use HEVC S for efficient compressed files or RAW when maximum image flexibility is the priority.

  2. Choose the resolution and frame rate together. Use 4K Fine for oversampled 4K up to 60p, regular 4K for 120p, or 2K-D and Full HD for 180p.

  3. Set white balance manually. Choose a preset or Kelvin value instead of allowing Auto White Balance to shift during the take.

  4. Check the fan and temperature settings. Use more aggressive cooling for hot environments or demanding frame rates.

  5. Confirm your audio source. Make sure LPCM 24-bit, 4-channel audio is active and decide whether you need the internal microphone.

  6. Check exposure with tools. Use False Color, zebras, or the waveform rather than relying only on the LCD preview.
